Three kinds of damage that look alike

• Acid etching. Etching cream eats into the surface. It cannot be scraped or dissolved off — the glass itself has to be taken down and polished back.
• Scratch tags. Cut into the glass with a blade or a stone. Same principle: the mark is in the pane, not on it.
• Paint and marker. This one sits on top, and it comes off far more cheaply. Do not let anyone quote you a restoration for paint.

They photograph almost identically, which is why we ask for a close-up at an angle before saying anything about price.

Why storefront owners call the same week

A tagged window reads as “nobody is looking after this place”. Foot traffic drops, tenants complain, and the tag invites the next one — taggers work the same glass twice. Replacement is the obvious answer and the expensive one: about $10 to $12 per square foot for the pane alone, plus labour, plus waiting on the order while your frontage stays damaged.

Restoration is done in place, on the pane you already have. For a commercial frontage the difference is usually thousands of dollars and days instead of weeks. More on storefront work here.

If it keeps happening

Restoring the same window three times is a bad deal for you and we will say so. Once the glass is clear again, an anti-vandal protective film takes the next hit instead of the pane: they cut the film, we peel it off and put on a new sheet. Restore first, then protect — in that order, because film over damage just seals the damage in where everyone can still see it.

How we work

1. You send photos — a wide shot and a close-up at an angle.
2. We tell you what it is: paint, etching, or a scratch tag, and what will come back.
3. You get a written estimate before anyone comes out. The estimate is the price. If it turns out worse than the photos showed, you hear it before we start, not after.
4. We work on site. For businesses, that can be outside your opening hours.

Questions we get asked

Will you get all of it out?
Usually, yes. We work on a best-effort basis and we tell you upfront what we can and cannot fix — especially where a tag runs right into the frame, which is the one place risk lives.

Will the glass look wavy where you worked?
Not when it is done properly. Distortion comes from removing too much in one spot; the step system exists to spread the work evenly across the pane.

Insurance is involved. Can you help?
Yes. You get a written estimate with the damage described in plain terms, which is what an adjuster needs.

The tag is on tinted or coated glass.
Tell us, or make sure it shows in the photos. Coatings change the answer and sometimes change the recommendation.
