If a scratch has landed on a storefront window, a shower enclosure or a glass tabletop, the first question is almost always the same: is it cheaper to polish it out or to replace the panel? The honest answer is that glass scratch removal is priced per panel, not off a flat rate card — and a handful of factors decide where your job lands. Here is what actually moves the number, so you can judge a quote before you accept one.
What Decides the Cost of Glass Scratch Removal
Polishing glass is skilled labour plus consumables. Nobody can price it accurately from a phone description alone, which is why we ask for photographs before quoting. Four things drive the figure.
Scratch Depth
Depth matters more than length. A haze of fine surface scratching across a whole pane is often faster to correct than one deep gouge, because the deep one forces us to remove glass evenly across a wide area to avoid leaving a visible lens or distortion. If a fingernail catches in the scratch, expect the job to sit at the higher end.
Glass Type and Thickness
Annealed glass, tempered glass, laminated panels, low-e coated units and mirrored glass all behave differently under a polishing head. Coated and tempered glass demand slower, cooler work and tighter heat control, which adds time. Coated surfaces sometimes cannot be polished at all without stripping the coating — a limitation worth knowing before anyone starts.
Panel Size, Count and Access

Why We Do Not Publish a Price List
We are asked for a flat per-pane rate constantly, and we do not publish one. A number posted on a website would be wrong for most jobs in both directions — it would overcharge a simple single-panel polish and badly undercharge a coated, elevated or deeply gouged one. What we do instead is quote from photographs at no cost, and hold that quote once we have seen the glass. If a contractor gives you a firm price for scratch removal without seeing an image of the damage, treat it as an opening figure rather than a real one.
Restoration Versus Replacement
Restoration is normally the cheaper route, and the gap widens as the glass gets more specialised. Replacing a large storefront pane means fabrication lead time, permits in some cases, a crew, a lift and a day with your opening boarded or exposed. Polishing the existing pane usually happens in place, often within a single visit, with the storefront trading around us.
There is also the case where replacement is simply not available on any sensible timeline: custom shower enclosures, curved RV and motorhome windows, antique or oversized panels, and tabletops cut to a specific piece of furniture. In those situations restoration is not the budget option, it is the only practical one.
Keeping glass out of the waste stream has a second benefit. Flat glass is difficult to recycle once it is coated or laminated, and the US Environmental Protection Agency treats source reduction — not generating the waste in the first place — as the top of the waste hierarchy. Repairing a pane you already own sits exactly there.
What the Work Actually Involves
A technician assesses depth and glass type, masks the frame and surroundings, then works the surface with progressively finer abrasives and a cerium oxide polishing stage, keeping the glass cool and the removal even. The goal is optical clarity with no distortion, which is why the finishing passes take longer than the cutting ones.
Most single-panel jobs are done within a few hours; multi-panel storefronts are commonly a single working day. Work is carried out to OSHA requirements for respiratory protection, eye protection and working at height, which is not a detail to wave away when the work happens on an occupied retail floor.
When Polishing Is Not the Right Answer
A good contractor should be willing to tell you no. Scratches deep enough to compromise the structural integrity of a tempered panel, damage in a laminated unit that has reached the interlayer, a failed double-glazed seal, and chips or cracks that can propagate are all replacement cases, not polishing cases. Removing glass to chase a scratch that deep risks distortion or, on tempered glass, failure. If that is the verdict on your panel, we will say so before quoting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every scratch be polished out? No. Light to moderate scratching almost always comes out completely. Deep gouges and damage through a coating may improve substantially without reaching invisible, and some panels are replacement cases. An assessment tells you which you have.
Will polished glass look distorted afterwards? Not when the removal is spread correctly. Distortion is the signature of rushed work over too small an area — it is a workmanship failure, not an inherent trade-off.
How long does it take? A few hours for a single panel in most cases, up to a full day for a multi-panel storefront, depending on depth and access.
Can I do it myself? Consumer kits can help with very light surface marks on ordinary annealed glass. On tempered, coated or large panels, uneven hand pressure and heat are what produce the permanent distortion people call us to fix.
